What's Your Purpose?
Before you create a presence for your business on Twitter, you should first clearly define what the purpose of this platform will play for your business. The purpose of your twitter account should be positive and concise. Whether the intention is to bring great minds together, create an instant channel, direct customers attention, start an opinion poll, business development or customer service, Twitter can help in all these areas. Twitter is just another way to connect with your customers and build relationships. Here are 7 Simple Steps to help you create a Twitter Account for your business
Step 1: Select Twitter Account Name
Visit https://twitter.com/signup, where you will begin the process of creating a Twitter account. You will need a valid email address to begin. If this is a business Twitter account we highly recommend you use your business email address. It is more professional if you can enter your business email address and people will respect your company more. You will be asked to enter a “full name”, if this Twitter account is a business one be sure to enter your business name. The full name will appear on your Twitter account, in the bio and next to your Twitter icon. Therefore, putting your business name will help bring followers interested in your brand.
Step 2: Select Twitter "Handle"
Next you will need to select a Twitter username, also known as a "handle". Your handle will be how you are recognized and referred to on Twitter. You will want to select a Twitter handle that is easily recognized as part of your business. This is helpful when people search on twitter for your product or service you will start to show in the feed. If you can not use your business name as your handle be sure to use keywords for what you sell or service. Handles are limited to 15 characters and count towards the 140 character limited for each tweet you send out. If you use all 15 characters then you only have 125 characters left for tweet so, you may need to shorten or abbreviate.
Step 3: Follow Tweeters
Follow the step-by-step process by following other tweeters, find and follow well-know people and add contacts (only if you want to but this is not necessary). Following other tweeter may help you when decided your own tweets. Other tweeters can show you what people tweet. But, you can select “skip” for any of these steps located at the bottom left side of the page.
Step 4: Upload Image
Upload an image which will be shown on your Twitter page and along with all tweets you send out. We suggest you avoid using words or light colors. If you have a simple logo this will work well. However, if your business is small or you are a big part of the brand consider using your image. People tend to connect better with images of people rather than logos. If you decide to use a photo, be sure your image is something you are proud to represent, not only you but, your business too. A professional photo would work great here! Your image can be maximum size of 700K. JPG, GIF, PNG.
Step 5: Build Biogrophy
You are allowed 160 characters for your biography. Be sure to clearly identify what your business does, how your business can help others solve their problems and include a link to your business website. If you are having a problem getting down to 160 characters try to avoid adjectives or descriptive words (i.e. beautiful, great, nice). Instead, find ways to be concise and to the point. This is an opportunity to give a basic description of your business, get to the heart of who you are and what your business does.
Step 6: Create Background
You have the ability to create a branded Twitter background. This is a perfect opportunity to build brand awareness so take advantage of it. Simply click the sprocket located on the top left bar of your Twitter page. A drop down bar will appear. Select “settings”. From here select “Design” located on the left side of the page. Next select “change background” and upload a branded background. If you don’t have time or resources to build an optimized background you can upload your logo and tile it. Keep in mind the maximum size for the background is 800k. Be lookout for future posts with more instructions on how to create exciting backgrounds.
Step 7: Design Header
One of the newest features of Twitter is the ability to create a header. Twitter recommends dimensions of 1252×626 with a maximum file size of 5MB. The header should not be distracting, avoid text and focused images. Keep your header simple. For instance, if you sell cars, you could make it a picture of a road or a car. Your Twitter icon along with bio will appear laid over your header.
Once you have completed these seven steps you can begin tweeting! Send out your introduction tweet and begin engaging with current and potential customers. There are many benefits to setting up a business Twitter account. Twitter is good for all the the following purposes, depending on what type of business you have: building brand awareness, customer support, engaging with current customers, lead generation, networking and integrating with other social media presences. Therefore, Twitter can become an extremely valuable source of marketing and information for any business!
