Search Engines Can't "See" Your Images....Make Sure All Your Images Have Alt Tags

When it comes to SEO tutorials, most people tend to focus on optimizing text content, social media, and link-building over almost anything else.

While these items do indeed comprise the foundation of a good SEO marketing plan, it should be noted that the images you use can provide you with a bit of a boost in your online visibility as well.

What Are Alt Tags?

Alt tags can be simply thought of as keywords for images. Whereas the standard tag for a specific image on a website tends to be a long string of location information and pixel size, adding alt tags can offer a much more succinct description of what the image contains.

This raises your keyword saturation level within the body of your website, serving to rank your site a bit more highly for your preferred terms when the search engine indexing robots make their rounds.

Make sure that you choose a concise and relevant group of keywords to use for any alt tag before your site goes live, as it also needs to be noted that these tags actually have specific practical purposes beyond SEO matters.

Original Purpose, Helping The Visually Impaired

Initially, alt tags were conceived as a way to help visually impaired Internet users who surf the web by using a text reader.  These text readers can simply read the alt tags to your website visitor, offering them a solid idea as to what an image might contain.

Keeping this primary function of the alt tag can help you quite a bit as you create the string of words you plan to use; just ask yourself how concisely and succinctly you could describe the content of your image to someone who was visually impaired using only a handful of words.

Many people have found this simple guideline to be a wonderfully effective way to kill two birds with one stone -- this technique of concisely and accurately describing an image to the visually impaired not only makes your site particularly sensitive to the disabled visitor, but also seems to naturally spark the best use of keywords from an SEO perspective at the same time.

Ensure that any and all images throughout your site use the most useful tags you can think of, and be sure that each image does indeed contain these tags for the benefit of both visually impaired web visitors and your own SEO rankings alike for best results.

Your attention to detail in this matter should pay off nicely!
